I don't know about you, but when it comes to asking for help, I'm as stubborn as they come! It's such an awkward thing to do, and I've always felt it makes you feel just a little less capable.
But let's be honest here. When we're going through breast cancer, getting help is a must. Whether it's just after diagnosis, during or after treatment or surgeries, long term medication or even recurrence, we need support.
The good news is, there's now an online tool, that can make asking for and getting help, super simple, and super easy (and not at all embarrassing!).
Recently I chatted with Susan Palmer, founder and CEO of Gather My Crew. Susan shared with me all about what this tool is and how it works. So I'll break it down for you.
Essentially Gather My Crew is an online tool that allows you to list all the things in your life you need help with, anything from help putting bed linen on, to walking the dog, to dropping the kids off to school. Then you invite your support network - your friends, family, colleagues, neighbors etc - to become part of your crew. If they accept they can then see what you need help with and when you need it. They then select one or many items they can help you with, and you're off and running. And all of that.....for FREE!!!
In my mind this tool solves two very real issues when going through breast cancer:
Those going through breast cancer need help but often find it hard to ask for help
The community around those going through breast cancer want to help but don’t know what they can help with (and let's be honest, we can only take so many lasagnes!)
Launched just last year, Gather My Crew is already having a real impact on the lives of those who use it. Also, it's actually available to anyone going through a time of crisis (not just those going through breast cancer), so if you feel you’d benefit, or know of someone who would, head on over to gathermycrew.org and get started.
And a huge thanks to Susan, who had the vision to create this tool to help all us stubborn people out!
